How To Fix & Maintain Your Garbage Disposal Like A Pro
Are you having trouble with your garbage disposal or are curious as to how you can keep yours in good working order?
There are a few things you can do to keep your disposal running smoothly and fix it in no time at all if an issue arises. In the video above, I have the Evolution Pro 750 model disposal with me to demonstrate how you can potentially save yourself a service call.
Out in the field, we see customers shoving all kinds of things down at their disposal. Whatever you put in your disposal, make sure you don’t shove everything down there all at once. There are eight food items in particular that you should never put down disposal: bones, celery, coffee grounds, eggshells, fruit pits, grease, pasta, and potato peels.

If your garbage disposal is emitting a foul odor, there are three remedies you can apply. First, try cutting up a lemon into small chunks and dropping them down there one at a time. You can also try putting ices cubes down there, which will not only clean the disposal but also sharpen the blades. Lastly, you can try pouring a mixture of one cup of baking soda and one cup of white vinegar and flushing that out with cold water.
If your disposal hums or turns off whenever you turn it on, it’s probably jammed. If it’s humming, turn the switch off and use an Allen wrench to manually unjam the disposal from the bottom. You can then dig inside it from the top with your hand and remove whatever is causing the obstruction. If your disposal keeps turning off, there is a red reset button on the bottom you can press. After that, just follow the same protocol mentioned above. And remember—never leave the wrench in and turn on the disposal again.
