How To Fix A Jammed Disposal

If your disposal isn’t working, here are a couple of tips that should fix the problem. Remember to unplug your unit before trying either of these tips.

First, if you turn the disposal on and you hear a humming sound, that means the blades are jammed. To fix this, all you need to do is take an Allen wrench (or the tool that came with the unit that looks like an Allen wrench), insert it into the bottom of the disposal, and wiggle it back and forth until you start making a circular motion. This will free up the blades. When you start, it might be hard to wiggle the wrench back and forth, but eventually,x you’ll feel the blades loosen.

Once the blades are completely free, you should be able to hear whatever was jamming them rattling around inside the disposal and be able to reach inside and take it out. After that’s done, plug your unit back in and turn it on to see if it’s working properly.

If the disposal isn’t making any sound when it’s on, that means it’s gotten jammed so badly that it tripped the breaker switch at the bottom of the unit. If you look closely at the bottom of the unit, you’ll see a reddish-looking button that basically functions as a reset button. A lot of times, if the disposal starts off humming but then stops working completely, it means this safety mechanism has been activated to prevent the disposal from burning up. If you press this button, it will restart your disposal, and it should start working after you plug it back in and turn it on.
